Desensitization

Gradually exposing your dog to something that worries them, starting at a level so mild it does not trigger any fear, then slowly increasing the intensity as your dog stays relaxed. The goal is to build comfort at each step before moving closer to the full experience.

The key is working below your dog's threshold, the point at which they start to react. You might begin with a scary sound played very quietly, a strange dog far in the distance, or the nail clippers simply resting on the floor. Only when your dog is calm do you make it slightly more intense.

Desensitization is almost always paired with counter-conditioning, where each gentle exposure also predicts something wonderful like food. Together they change how your dog feels, turning a trigger that once caused worry into one that predicts good things. Move at your dog's pace, never force them to face a fear, and always give them the option of more space.
