One of the four quadrants of operant conditioning, negative punishment occurs when something the dog likes is removed after an unwanted behavior, making that behavior less likely in the future. "Negative" means something is taken away, and "punishment" means the behavior decreases.

Common examples include taking away food, toys, play, access to a space, a view out of a window, or social attention after an unwanted behavior.
