Your Dog will learn to roll over from a standing position for a hand signal and the verbal cue 'Roll Over'.

Training steps

  1. Cue lie on your side using a small hand signal

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    Prompt Your Dog onto their side by making a small hand signal (flip your flat hand from palm facing down to palm facing up), and wait to see if they lie on their side. As soon as they do, give them a treat.

    Success: Your Dog lies on their side.

  2. Lure Your Dog to roll onto their back

    Setup: Your Dog is lying on their side.

    Use a lure to move Your Dog's head up and over to the other side to encourage them to roll onto their back.

    Success: Your Dog rolls over to their back.

  3. Lure Your Dog to roll over from on their side

    Setup: Your Dog is lying on their side.

    Use a lure to move Your Dog's head up and over to the other side to encourage them to roll onto their back, then all the way over.

  4. Lure a roll over

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    With Your Dog in a down position (not on their side), lure their head up and over to the other side to encourage them to roll onto their back, then all the way over.

  5. Lure a fast roll over

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    With Your Dog in a down position (not on their side), lure them to roll over faster.

    Success: Your Dog rolls over to the other side.

  6. Bury the lure

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    Bury the lure in your prompting hand by pressing it against your palm with your thumb. Lure Your Dog to roll over, but give them a different treat from the opposite hand or your treat pouch (do not give them the buried lure).

    Success: Your Dog rolls over.

  7. Large hand signal

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    Prompt Your Dog to roll over by repeating the luring motion with your hand, but without a treat in your hand. Wait to see if they roll over. As soon as they do, give them a treat from the opposite hand or your treat pouch.

    Success: Your Dog rolls over.

  8. Medium hand signal

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    Prompt Your Dog to roll over by making a medium-sized hand signal and wait to see if they roll over. As soon as they do, give them a treat from the opposite hand or your treat pouch.

    Success: Your Dog rolls over.

  9. Small hand signal

    Setup: Your Dog is lying down.

    Prompt Your Dog to roll over by making a small hand signal (point at Your Dog and make a loop with your finger), and wait to see if they roll over. As soon as they do, give them a treat from the opposite hand or your treat pouch.

    Success: Your Dog rolls over.

  10. Add the verbal cue

    Setup: Your Dog is standing.

    Say the verbal cue 'Roll Over', then prompt Your Dog to lie down with a verbal cue or hand signal, then use the small hand signal to prompt Your Dog to roll over. As soon as they do, give them a treat. Track how many times Your Dog needs the cue for down and the hand signal for roll over versus how many times Your Dog lies down and rolls over for the verbal cue alone.

  11. Only the verbal cue

    Setup: Your Dog is standing.

    Say the verbal cue 'Roll Over', then wait to see if Your Dog lies down and rolls over.
