Stand Stay
Basic Manners ยท 27 steps ยท by Push Drop Stick
Your Dog will learn to stay in a stand position until released, for a hand signal or the verbal cue '"stand"', amid basic distractions and at a distance.
A stand stay holds Your Dog still on their feet, which is exactly what you want for grooming, toweling off muddy paws, putting on a harness or coat, vet exams, and even the show ring. It is also handy at the door: for an excitable dog who needs to wait longer than a quick Wait, a stand stay keeps them parked and out from underfoot while you open it. Train Down Stay and Sit Stay first, since those positions are easier starting points.
For this plan you will also need:
**- A No Reward Marker:** such as "Oops," to mark the moment Your Dog breaks position and help them understand why they won't get a treat for that rep.
**- A Release Cue:** such as "Okay!" or "Break!" to let Your Dog know they are free to move out of position, especially at the end of a training session. Using a release cue consistently will teach Your Dog to hold the stay until you release them!
